Sailfish is based on the award-winning Knysna 480, built in 2009 by South Africa's renowned Knysna Yacht Company, a blue-water cruising catamaran admired for combining ocean-going capability with the comfort of a luxury home afloat.
The Sailfish is 15m in length (48ft), and the catamaran layout means lots of space below and above decks. Sailfish can sleep a maximum of 8 passengers in 4 fore-and-aft double cabins on the port and starboard sides. The cabins each have their own shower room and a spacious living area, although guests will spend most of their time on deck, including eating meals. There is no air-conditioning in the cabins as otherwise a generator has to run all night, but the boat always lies into the wind, and therefore there is constant cross-flow ventilation from the way it is designed.
Sailfish is fully crewed with an experienced skipper and a private chef. The crew will look after everything from navigation to meals, so no previous sailing experience is required.
The itinerary of the Sailfish voyage will depend on the duration of the trip, time of year and how guests want to spend their time – all discussed in detail with the skipper on arrival. It is possible to head for the surfing waves on the edge of the atolls, stay in the calmer waters for snorkelling/swimming/fishing or take the dinghy over to deserted sand-strips where you can picnic. For an extra cost, diving and equipment can also be arranged.
Wind conditions are generally light to moderate from November to April and then stronger in the other months, but it rarely gets too strong to be port-bound as the atolls and reefs break up any waves, so sailing is generally very smooth. If the wind completely drops, Sailfish has powerful engines, so the itinerary is not disrupted.
Rates include all meals, snacks, teas and coffees, soft drinks, linen, towels, snorkelling, fishing, use of tender with 25 hp outboard and airport transfers. We, the Maldivian Charter Club, recommend Sailfish for budget vacations for a nice, small company.
