Green Sea Turtle
5 of the 7 species of sea turtles in the world are found in the Maldives.
The green sea turtle is the most common.
- This is one of the largest species on the planet. Their weight ranges from 65 to 130 kg and their length is 1-1.2 meters.
- They are called "green" although the shell can include dark brown, olive, yellow and black hues. And green turtles became green because of the layer of fat that is under the shell. It is green and acquired its coloration due to the animals' vegetarian diet.
- Unlike most sea turtles, the green turtle feeds on seaweed and grass.
- Green turtles can hold their breath and stay underwater for up to 5 hours.
- They use paddle-like flippers to swim. And usually move at a speed of about 3 km/h, but in case of danger they can "accelerate" up to 35 km/h.
