One of the Most Beautiful Bays in the Maldives

Hanifaru bay is one of the most interesting bays in the Maldives. Here you can witness a rare natural phenomenon called “manta madness”.

On new and full moon days from mid-May to November, strong tides bring huge amounts of plankton into the bay. This is known to be a food source for many marine life, including manta rays.

Usually they feed quite calmly, swimming leisurely in small groups. But the more plankton, the more manta rays come to eat them. And at this point begins a real gastronomic carnival.

The normally measured and graceful mantas literally go crazy. Dozens of individuals rush through the water column, knocking each other down, doing somersaults and twisting in a crazy round dance.

The spectacle is mesmerizing. Believe me, snorkeling in the “heart” of this gorgeous feast will be one of the most exciting and mind-blowing experiences of your life.

It is important to remember that Hanifaru Bay is a nature reserve with a number of restrictions for tourists:

When planning your trip, don't forget to check the lunar calendar.
