Top 3 Atolls in the Maldives to Spot a Whale Shark

1. South Ari Atoll

The absolute champion for whale shark sightings. Here, they don’t just migrate — they linger, drawn by the warm, plankton-rich waters.

The main hotspot is the SAMPA marine protected area. Sightings are almost daily, especially from August to November.

Maamigili Reef is one of the primary hubs for whale sharks. Nearby islands like Dhigurah, Rangali, and Vilamendhoo act as true magnets for these majestic creatures.

2. Faafu Atoll

Less touristy, more wild. That’s why it’s a favorite among those seeking solitude and unspoiled nature.

Currents and plankton biomass attract whale sharks especially during transitional seasons — March to May and September to November.

Fewer boats mean a better chance for a personal encounter, free from crowds.

3. Baa Atoll

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, famous for Hanifaru Bay where dozens of manta rays gather. But occasionally, whale sharks join this underwater frenzy, tempted by peak plankton blooms.

Baa is ideal for those craving maximum biodiversity and marine emotion.
